The core loop: one person, one dog
Beast of Reincarnation's combat identity comes from controlling two fighters as one unit. You directly control Emma the Sealer — dodging, parrying and striking in real time with her katana — while Koo fights alongside you and executes techniques on command. The developers describe this as a hybrid of action and turn-based RPG design: Emma's half of the fight is pure action, while Koo's half carries the flavor of selecting moves for a battle partner.
If you've played Pokémon, the DNA is recognizable — Game Freak's director Kota Furushima previously worked on Pokémon battle systems — but the execution here is a demanding action RPG, not a menu battler. Comparisons from press coverage have run to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, NieR: Automata and Black Myth: Wukong.
Emma's toolkit
- Katana combat: fast primary strikes, with the demanding enemy design of a souls-like — expect stamina discipline, punishable windups, and bosses that require learning patterns rather than button mashing.
- Blight powers: Emma can manipulate plants both to fight and to traverse — bursting forests out of the wasteland is a core visual and mechanical motif. Expect blight abilities to open paths in exploration as well as create openings in combat.
- Loadout flexibility: the game explicitly supports ranged, stealthy and aggressive playstyles through your choice of gear, skill trees and spirit stones — covered in depth in our builds guide.
Koo's role: your commanded partner
Koo isn't an AI sidekick you ignore — he's the turn-based half of the design. In battle you give Koo commands to unleash various techniques: offensive strikes, support actions, and combo setups that mesh with Emma's positioning. Managing when to spend Koo's techniques — especially during boss punish windows — looks to be the system's key skill test.
Both characters grow over the journey: the story frames it as Emma and Koo's bond and abilities blossoming as they travel. Expect Koo's command list to expand substantially across the ~40-hour campaign.
Boss powers: capture and use
Emma and Koo's mission is to defeat Bosses from all over the world and capture their powers — the acquired abilities then feed back into your combat options. This is the game's clearest progression hook: each major boss is both a wall and a reward. We'll document every capturable boss power, and which builds they slot into, as we clear the game at launch.
How hard is it?
Steam's community tags lean Souls-like and Difficult, and everything shown in previews supports that: deliberate combat, large bosses that rule regions of the world, and enemy variety spanning oversized mutant creatures to robots. Difficulty options haven't been fully detailed pre-launch; we'll confirm accessibility and difficulty settings here on day one.
